ABOUT DR. SLAVEN

Compassionate care. Rooted in experience. Focused on you.

Having worked nearly a decade in higher levels of care for eating disorders, I have a deep knowledge of the field. I strive to utilize evidence-based modalities while treating everyone as a unique individual. I pour my heart into the care of my patients and because of this, I see people get better.

I pride myself on my thoughtfulness, thoroughness and non-judgmental approach. I connect deeply with my patients and believe that our relationship in itself can be healing. As a psychiatrist, I have the unique ability to integrate medication management, therapy and nutrition in to my care of those with eating disorders. No case is too complex— I am comfortable working with severe and enduring eating disorders and medically complex individuals.

Beyond eating disorders, I love working with anyone looking to find balance in their life. I believe that total health is achieved by both nourishing and moving our bodies. I often tell my patients that my ultimate dream for them is for them to experience the world with total food and body freedom.

I earned my medical degree at the University of Iowa and completed my psychiatry residency at George Washington University, where I served as chief resident and later associate program director. Following residency, I completed a fellowship in Eating Disorders through University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt. Since then, I have dedicated my career to caring for those with eating disorders and have worked in inpatient, residential, partial hospital, and intensive outpatient levels of care across the country. I have consistently been recognized for my leadership as well as my excellent patient care. I remain on volunteer faculty at George Washington University.

Outside of my work, I love spending time with my husband and two young kids, trying new foods and staying active. I strive to practice what I preach and live my life with the utmost balance. Being a mother has deepened my understanding of the importance of the care I provide. I love what I do an would be honored to be a part of your treatment journey.

Dr. Slaven is currently accepting patients virtually in Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia.
